SST Map Preview

Preview images (with magnification) for the following SST maps are available from the menu on the left. The dates covered by the maps and images are updated regularly.

  • Global SST field -- daily archives

    • "Microwave SST era" (mid-2002 - present)

This is a daily SST map at 0.011 degrees (about 1 km) equal-angle horizontal resolution. The analysis method used for mapping is the Multi-Resolution Variational Analysis (MRVA). The map is analyzed using the following satellite SST data: MODIS-Terra (operational since 1999), MODIS-Aqua (since 2002), AMSR-E (since 2002), AVHRR-GAC (~9 km resolution).
  • Regional SST field -- daily archives

    • North Central America (Apr 2008 to Mar 2010)

This map is an older version of the global map described above and is over a regional longitude-latitude box of [165W, 30W, 20S, 62N]. Also, less spatial smoothing is applied to produce this map. The production is complete over the two-year span from April 2008 to March 2010.
